On his debut album Moon People, Late Troubles (Chen Xi) crystallizes his unique dystopia into a kaleidoscopic collection of original tracks. Moon People showcases the fragile coherence of the artist’s wide range of interests and influences, charged with a twitching instability, like a needle jumping randomly around the radio dial. Each song reflects a different slice of a fractal mind, touching on formative experiences from Chen’s youth, stray memories from a past life in Beijing, hazily remembered snapshots from a disappearing countryside, the fresh dawn of new insight as the songwriter reaches a certain summit of personal and artistic maturity.

While the instruments and genres on Moon People change from track to track — fans of experimental electronica, spare electro-folk, outsider rap, and even mutant House will all find something to get into here — the one constant remains Chen’s dynamic vocal delivery, exploring a wider range of notes and nuance than any of his previous work. Like a hand-painted poster of yesterday’s news, Moon People is a collection of boutique treaties on the times, sometimes sorrowful, sometimes sweet, sometimes utterly bizarre — a cool prophecy spoken with all the emotion of a radio weather forecast. “Terrible your nostalgia turns into my arthritis” says Chen on album standout “Her Song,” an elegiac melody for his eldest daughter. “I want you to be a poet,” he tells her, even as throughout Moon People he hints that the troubles chasing us might be late, but they’re heavy and irredeemable.
